Yeti Log: The 100 Mille Run, AKA Run Beard Man Run!

Recommended Posts

I've decided to make a new log with my evolved goals. Long ago as a teen and beyond I sought only a muscular physique ignoring an all around rounded state and proper diet. Through a constantly evolving moral state my diet and ideals have grown, now as well as my goals.

Today as a grown man I seek new things, I crave new goals, to push and break new boundaries. Still 'weight lifting' and following a proper Vegan diet, I now desire to break the boundaries of human endurance and combine that with strength and power. Some say it can't be done, I say bullshit. Humans are perfectly designed for power, speed, endurance, and strength. The apex predator. Which is why we require strict responsibility so we don't rip this planet apart.

There were, and still are times where I trip and stumble dangerously close to death. Most recently with a total bowel obstruction that nearly ruptured my only remaining intestine. Half a life lived is not a life worth living.

I will run 100 miles. I do not know when I will reach this century run. Perhaps 1, 2, 5, 10, 15, maybe 20 years from now, all I know is I will do it. This log is here to chronicle this extreme pursuit of endurance, as well as my continuing goals of strength and power.

Good on you for pursuing new facets of your physical abilities!

Humans are perfectly designed for power, speed, endurance, and strength

By "designed" I assume you meant to say "evolved" I would even argue that humans are for better evolved for endurance than for speed and strength. A cheetah can run 75 mph, a beetle can walk around carrying 850 times its bodyweight, both of which make humans look absolutely pathetic in comparison. But over a long enough distance, humans can outrun nearly every land animal on the planet. This, along with our ability to reason, is our great trademark genetic advantage on this earth. Daniel Lieberman at Harvard has been doing extensive research on this very issue.

That said, 100 miles is an awesome goal, and should be treated with the awe and respect it deserves. Do not skip steps. I like that you seem willing to let it take however much time it needs, rather than setting an artificial deadline to accomplish it by. Good luck!

I have not yet pushed beyond the marathon distance, but I may in the future.

Cheers!

Thanks for all the support guys. I want this, and I'm going to get it.

I ran 115 minutes today, or just a smidge over 10 miles. Funny thing is I am not even tired, not in the slightest.

I am using this website to hash out my speed and stuff.

http://www.csgnetwork.com/csgtsd.html

According to it, I ran at just about 5 1/4 mph, which gives me an 11 1/2 minute mile.

Woo. We'll have to see how much I can do next time, I'm thinking 145 Minutes or so (an extra half hour) at 5 1/4 mph or 12 1/2 miles.

Hello Yeti,

I love your positive attitude. I agree in that we can be many things all at once, specialisation is one way that suits many but being multi trained is another way that also suits many and strength, agility, stamina, speed, endurance is absolutely possible in the same person. There aren't just triathlons but pentathlons and heptathlons.

I am fascinated by endurance so really feel you on this - it's why I want to do Ironman - it may take me 2 or 3 years but I have to do it - for me I'm just hungry for that complete endurance exeriance.

You will get to your goal because endurance is a lot about the mind and believing you can do it.

Last year I did a 24 hour event in the UK called TR24, I did not run continously as some did although it was never my goal to run non-stop, I had a milage goal instead which I made, mainly because in training there was never a doubt in my mind I would not make the milage I set for myself - and it was a high placed goal.

I expect you will already have heard of vegan endurance runner Scott Jurek, he writes quite a few articles that may help you.

The best of luck Yeti

Today was kind of disappointing but to be expected. I only did 10 1/4 miles but it was twice as hard than my last run and took me an extra 5 minutes or so. I guess when you are coming in fresh 10 miles 1x a week seems easy. Then when you try and do 10 miles 2x a week your body scratches it's proverbial head and goes, "Hmm, wait a second." when you go and do 10 miles 3x a week then your body turns on the 'oh shit alarm' and things get whacky.

What I am going to do is do 2 days rest, 2 days rest, and 3 days rest to utilize an entire week for training. I'll need to fight tooth and nail to get my body acclimated to 30 miles a week before I can even think of adding any mileage each day.

Divamom pointed out when I can run 10mi 3x a week I should only be looking to add a mile or so each day to prevent my body from going into oh shit mode.

I got really tired, not cardiovascularly, but I was having trouble controlling gait and impact as a result my knees and ankles are pretty sore. As the weeks go on and I can run 30 miles in a week I should be able to control myself better and avoid this.

Here's looking forward to 3 days of rest.

I did not say a mile a day...i said add judiciously in chunks of time to build endurance....

Also added, when in Kenya,...do as teh Kenyans do...run barefoot.

When in the burbs, run as the burbians do..in running shoes.

You will do it!

  • 2 weeks later...

I have been living without internet in my van for the past week, and before that have been too lazy to update. But I am still training toward my goal!

I am running every other day, or 15x a month. Thus so far I am doing 5 miles each day, which averages about 18 miles a week. I will begin adding to every 1st day starting tomorrow., until I reach marathon mileage, then I will begin adding to my other two 5 mile days until I get to about 50 miles per week.

I am doing resistance training 2x a week as well.

Today I did weighted pushups and biceps, abs, and lunges with my weight vest. No where to do chinups so I did curls with my vest.

On Tuesday I will be getting some new shoes. I need to move way from minimalist shoes because of my mileage and move toward a more mid-ground shoe like the New Balance Minimus or Merrel intro Road shoe.

Until next time.

Aww, miss you too Amy. <3

Mom and I are leaving here Tuesday for San Diego, what time is good for you? We can do coffee.

I am going to do REI because of their unconditional return guarantee for members. Btw. I discovered I need to lean forward slightly when forefoot striking. It reduces pain on my bad knee.

So today after a discouraging 4 days or so of my freaking knee hurting, and a sore foot, I took, Amy's AKA divamom's, advice and went and bought some modern running shoes. I went to REI but was ignored and lied to by some low life turd. I was thourougly pissed so I took off without a word to numbnuts.

I headed to Road Runner Running Institute down the street and was greeted by a friendly man named Chris who is a runner! Go figure. He analyzed my gait, my foot posture, my running form, and assessed my injury. After a long talk he transferred me over to Little John who picked me out a shit ton of shoes to try out. They directed me toward light weight minimalist shoes with a moderate 4mm heel to toe drop and shoes that focused on more forefoot striking posture than heel or mid-foot strikes.

We discovered I have flat feet, and a flat foot slapping gait over stresses and eventually injures my weak left knee and foot, where I had a stroke as a kid, which cannot compensate for the stress like my right leg. Barefoot shoes are not for me, and I was advised to readjust my foot strike to a strike just more forward of the ball of my foot and keep my heel from hitting the ground. If I tried to run in Vibrams say, I'd jack my feet up, especially putting on the mileage I do, on the surfaces I do.

Perhaps barefoot running works for some, but it does not take into account the un natural concrete I tend to run on, nor my damaged left leg.

I ended up liking the Saucony Kinvara 3 after trying a bunch our on the treadmill there and got a great deal on them, plus I was upgraded to VIP and can go back in 90 days if they do not work out, I also got 10 bucks off anything in the store! Woo! My 2nd choice was the Saucony Fast Twitch which I will try if these fail to work. I am super psyched to try em out I ended up getting the ugliest color possible. (;

Despite this injury I am up to 20 miles per week.

Accidently ran 7 miles in 55min on the running trail here at my sister's house with my new Saucony shoes with just slight soreness in my left knee during the run, and none afterward. These shoes are incredible, but it required a tremendous amount of focus to make sure my running form stayed proper during the run because I am not used to everything about them.

I think I can improve my tempo, posture, and foot strike slightly to negate some of the impact.

I hope my form becomes more natural as I get stronger.

THANKS DIVAMOM!

After some hardcore crack research, and experimentation I have discovered I have a deformed left leg. When I run my left foot pronates too much and causes my left kneecap to grind against the V shaped wedge it sits in. Most likely because of the stroke I had as a child. (Runners knee) My right knee is totally fine and has no issues whatsoever.

I am going to go back to Road Runner and get a custom orthodic insole to control the pronation.

I am dragging my heels in my Kinvara 3s so I think I might go and try and find a zero drop with a removable insole. Preferably with forefoot padding.

Getting closer to my final solution!!

In the mean time, I need to let this knee heal for a couple days. So no run tomorrow!

Thanks for the support!
